James Milton Slade

SAVANNAH: James Milton Slade, 92, passed away May 27, 2014, at Savannah Square Health Center in Savannah, Georgia. He was born in Griffin, Georgia, on June 20, 1921, to the late Ivor Garrick Slade and Thomas Jefferson Slade, Jr. His family moved to Thomaston, Georgia, where he made his home for most of his life. Mr. Slade graduated from R.E. Lee High School, Thomaston. He attended West Georgia College in Carrollton and later Draughon's School of Business in Atlanta. He joined to Army during WW II and served his country working in the Adjutant General Corps in Germany, England, and France.

After the war, he met and married Madge Ann Yawn in 1948. They had on daughter, Iva Susanne Mock. He belonged to the Thomaston Country Club. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Thomaston.

Mr. Slade spent most of his career working for the Federal government as a Selective Service Officer and as a bookkeeper and tax preparer Slade Accounting Services. After retiring from the Selective Service, he pursued several other entrepreneurial endeavors as well.

Known as Milton or "Bubba" most of his life, he began calling himself Jim after moving to Savannah in 2006. They missed their beloved Thomaston and talked about it constantly. However, they enjoyed living at the Landings and trying to find their way around Savannah!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivor Garrick Slade and Thomas Jefferson Slade, Jr. Jeff and a brother, Thomas Jefferson Jeff Slade, III.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Madge Ann Yawn Slade, his daughter, Susanne Slade Mock and her husband, William H. Billy Mock, Jr. of Savannah. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Ann Kearse Slade, a niece, Christina Ann George Jeff, great niece, Ashley Whitaker McConnell Brad, and their three children, Slade, Grey, and Elizabeth Ann all of Perry, GA. Also surviving is a great niece, Kearse George of Denver, CO. His surviving step-grandchildren include, William H. Mock, III of Newnan, GA, Michael Joseph Mock of Atlanta, GA and Patrick O'Brien Mock Kimberly of Decatur, GA. He has one step-great granddaughter, Chloe Ann Mock of Decatur, GA.

The family will receive friends and family from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 29, 2014 at The First United Methodist Church, Thomaston.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 29, 2014 in Southview Cemetery, Thomaston.
